The fireplace damper is the movable plate that controls the airflow between your firebox and the flue above. A properly functioning damper allows you to open the flue when a fire is burning to vent smoke and gases, and close it tightly when the fireplace is not in use to prevent conditioned air from escaping up the chimney. When a throat damper can no longer seal properly, we recommend replacement with a top-mount damper, which installs at the very top of the chimney stack and doubles as a chimney cap. Top-mount dampers provide a far tighter seal than throat dampers and virtually eliminate the energy loss associated with open or poorly sealing throat plates.
